Common Problems

Every patient is different, and we pride ourselves on delivering a customized treatment plan that meets your needs—physical, medical/dental, and aesthetic. Described here are just a few of the common conditions we see and treat in our office.

Keep in mind that if your child or teenager has an overbite, under-bite, or other condition, it’s usually best to treat it now—waiting could mean the need for surgery to correct the problem in the future.

And if you’re an adult, don’t think that braces are only for children—it’s never too late to get the great face and smile that can change your look and outlook on life!

Spacing of Teeth

Unhappy with the look of your teeth because they’re too spread apart or too close together? Braces can be used to close the spaces or alleviate the crowding, giving you an ideal bite.

Overbite

This condition, where the top teeth protrude beyond the bottom, may be corrected through two phases of treatment in children. The first helps the patient’s jaw to grow more harmoniously while the second aligns the teeth and bite.

Crossbite or Underbite

When one or more teeth are tilted toward the cheek or the tongue as compared to the teeth above, you have a crossbite. When the lower teeth protrude beyond the top when your jaw is closed, you have an underbite. Both of these conditions can cause jaw joint discomfort and excessive wear patterns on teeth. Braces can make smiling and chewing much easier!

Open Bite

This is the name for a condition where the front teeth don’t touch when the jaw is closed—often the result of thumb sucking as a child. Braces, along with a special appliance to retrain the tongue, can provide the permanent remedy.

Crowding

Crowding is the lack of space for all the teeth to fit in a well aligned and aesthetically pleasing manor within the jaws. It is commonly referred to as twisted teeth or double rows.

Crowding occurs when there is disharmony in the tooth- to-jaw size relationship or when the teeth are larger than the available space.

Missing Teeth

Maybe you’ve been missing teeth all of your life. If so, braces can be used to move teeth into the correct position and make a bridge, implant placement, or other correction possible.
